Lupus with High Potassium and Creatinine Levels

Topics: Lupus Nephritis Symptoms Lupus Nephritis

Details: I have Lupus and apparently now have high potassium and creatinine levels. Does this always mean kidney disease?

Expert Answer

In clinic, doctors usually use serum creatinine level to detect kidney condition. Normally, healthy kidneys can eliminate extra creatinine from the body timely. If creatinine level keeps in the high normal persistently, it must mean at least 50% of kidney function has lost.

Kidney damage is one common complication of Lupus, SLE, because this disease is one systemic disorder. It causes immune complexes to build up in different organs and systems via blood circulation. When these substances collect in the kidneys and cause inflammatory reactions, kidney disease called Lupus Nephritis occurs easily.

If kidneys are damaged severely by the accumulation of immune complexes, they will lose their ability to remove extra mineral including sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and so on, from the body efficiently. Then, patients may have high potassium level and present irregular heartbeat and breathing problems.

If your creatinine and potassium levels are only higher than the normal temporarily, it may be due to other disorders. On the contrary, kidney problem may be the underlying cause.

To reverse your kidney damage, the key is to remove immune complexes from the body and repair damaged kidney cells. Check with the doctor online to find correct therapies.
