Can Dialysis Patients Take Collagen Supplement

Posted: by Dr.Zhao Time: 2015-06-15 03:59

Topics: Dialysis

Details: I have been on dialysis for 2 years. Collagen supplement hasn’t been on my diet plan. Can I add it into my diet plan?

Expert Answer

Dialysis is one renal replacement therapy that replaces impaired kidneys to remove waste products and toxins and filter blood. However, during the fluid elimination, some useful nutritions like protein will leak into urine. This is why these kidney failure patients are suggested to take in more protein after dialysis. Otherwise, they may experience malnutrition, bone disease, and so on.

Collagen supplement is one source of protein, so it can provide protein for these patients. Therefore, it can help prevent malnutrition, bone disease, and some other complications caused by protein deficiency. However, it provides large molecular protein that may increase the burden on kidneys. From this point, patients can’t eat too much collagen supplement, and the intake amount should depend on patients’ illness condition.

If you want to add this supplement into your diet plan, the other foods containing protein should be reduced. To make you take in collagen supplement correctly, you can consult the doctor online firstly before consuming it. Any other question, you can leave it to us.
