Details: My son has IgA Nephropathy and frequent urination. Now, he is only 22 years old. Is frequent urination a severe sign?

Expert Answer

IgA Nephropathy patients’ prognosis changes from person to person. In some cases, patients can get remission spontaneously. Most often, IgA Nephropathy progresses into end stage kidney failure slowly. During the progression, more and more symptoms and complications will occur.

Frequent urination is just one sign of IgA Nephropathy, and it is often attributed to urinary tract infections. For patients with IgA Nephropathy, their immune ability is lower than the normal people. This is due to two reasons. One is immune disorder. As we all know, this disease is just caused by abnormal immune system. The other is low immune system. To control patients’ kidney disease, patients are often suggested to take steroids or immunosuppressants. These medicines work through weakening patients’ immune system. Then, patients are at a risk of infections including urinary tract infections.

Now, we have known why your 22-year-old son has frequent urination. To fight against this problem, he is suggested to drink more water or use antibiotics. Besides, some therapies that can help treat kidney disease from the root should also be sought.
