Once protein presents in diabetic's urine, the patient should pay highly attention to it. This is because diabetes with protein leakage may aggravate into kidney failure gradually, if uncontrolled effectively. How to handle protein in kidneys for people with diabetes?
If the amount of protein leakage in urine ranges from 30 to 300 mg/24h and the urine test detects twice of this condition continuously, it can diagnose early stage diabetic kidney disease or diabetic nephropathy once other causes are ruled out. Then, some methods are helpful to manage patients' health problem.
- Diet
Once patients have proteinuria, their daily protein intake should be limited in 0.8g/kg body weight. If patients have some dangerous risk such as high blood pressure and family history of kidney disease, they should control their protein intake early. When diabetic kidney disease aggravates into renal insufficiency, they are suggested to take in 0.6g/kg of protein every day and eat more high-quality protein.
- Well control of blood sugar
Good management of blood sugar is helpful to reduce proteinuria, and the selection of diabetes medications should not damage inherent kidney cells. If patients are diagnosed with Diabetic Nephropathy, insulin will be their first choice and they should stop biguanides.
- Anti-hypertensive medications
High blood pressure can lead to the onset of diabetic kidney disease and worsen kidney damage. Ideal anti-hypertensive medications should be able to slow down the progression of kidney disease and not increase the insulin resistance. These patients' blood pressure should be controlled to lower than 130/80 mmHg. If their proteinuria is more than 1g/d or serum creatinine level increases, their target blood pressure should be 125/75mmHg or less.
- Quit alcohol and smoking
If patients are used to drinking alcohol or smoking, they should stop these unhealthy living habits. A healthy living habit can help protect the remaining kidney functioning tissues and manage protein leakage.
