Sleep Problems in Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a systemic disorder which can involve multiple organs and systems throughout the whole body. Sleep problems are commonly seen in type 2 diabetes like difficulty failing asleep or staying asleep. But some patients may get too much sleep. Sleep problems in type 2 diabetes are mainly due to the following factors:

Obesity is commonly seen in type 2 diabetes. It is often associated with snoring, sleep apnea, and sleep disturbance. Losing weight can help relieve the condition.

Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia

Both high blood sugar and low blood sugar can attribute to sleep problems in type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar may happen after eating too many calories, missing medications or emotional stress. Low blood sugar may occur when you have inadequate food intake, take too much insulin or other hypoglycemic drugs.

Peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is commonly seen in diabetes due to uncontrolled blood sugar level. It is another cause of sleep disruption in type 2 diabetes. This nerve damage can cause a loss of feeling in the feet or symptoms such as tingling, numbness, burning, and pain.

Sleep apnea

Obesity is commonly seen in type 2 diabetes. It is a major risk of developing sleep apnea. Sleep apnea results in low oxygen levels in blood because the blockages prevent air from getting into the lungs. Some researches have shown a possible link between sleep apnea and the development of diabetes and insulin resistance.

The above are the major causes of sleep problems in type 2 diabetes. As they result from diabetes, if the primary condition is controlled, the associated problems will disappear gradually.
