Constipation is one problem that affects many End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) people’s life. This makes patients feel discomfortable, so patients must want to find some effective treatment to manage constipation with ESRD.
The causes of constipation for ESRD patients
Generally, this problem is due to three conditions. The first one is lack of fluid intake, the second one is low-fiber diet plan, and the last one is electrolyte imbalance caused by impaired kidneys. According to these underlying causes, we would like to recommend the following therapies.
Water and dietary fiber are two important substances that can help ease patients’ constipation, so ESRD patients are suggested to drink correct amount of water and eat more rich-fiber foods such as celery and oat. In end stage kidney disease, kidneys are damaged so severely that patients need to pay attention to their intake of potassium and phosphorus.
- Scientific life and working arrangement
Most often, ESRD patients are suggested to do some gentle exercise, because it can improve gastrointestinal tract function. Besides, exercise is good to build a strong body.
- Arrange a good bowl evacuation habit
Daily bowel movement in certain time can make patients have bowel evacuation regularity. What’s more, never miss stool when having a desire to defecate. Before going to bed, try to massage the abdomen that is also helpful for gastrointestinal tract movement.
- Take laxative if necessary
If diet plan and lifestyle changes can help ease ESRD patients’ constipation, they are not suggested to take laxative, because of side effects and dependency. If patients’ constipation is quite severe, they may need to take laxative with doctor’s guidance.
